BILL & MELINDA GATES FOUNDATION GATES CONFER PM MODI WITH GLOBAL GOALKEEPER AWARD


Prime Minister Narendra Modi was on 25 September 2019 at New York  conferred the Global Goalkeeper award by Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation for Swachh Bharat Abhiyan launched by his government.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi lauded the countrymen from all over India for contributing to the grand success of the cleanliness mission and that he shares the honour with them.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi said that, "Getting the award in the year of Mahatma Gandhi's 150th birth anniversary is personally significant for me. When 130 crore people take a pledge, any challenge can be overcome."

Prime Minister Narendra Modi dedicated the award to those Indians who transformed the Swachh Bharat campaign into a "people's movement" and accorded topmost priority to cleanliness in their day-to-day lives.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi said that, "No such campaign was seen or heard about in any other country in the recent past. It might have been launched by our government, but people took control of it. As a result, over 11 crore toilets were built in the country in the last five years, which was a record.”

Prime Minister Narendra Modi Stressing that the success of the campaign could not be measured in numbers, said that, the poor people and the women of India were benefitted the most by it.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi said that, "Due to lack of toilets, a number of girls had to drop out of schools. Our daughters want to study, but because of lack of toilets, they had to abandon their education mid-way and sit at home."

Prime Minister Narendra Modi said that, It was the responsibility of his government to help the girls and women of the country come out of this situation and it had performed the duty with utmost sincerity.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi said that, The World Health Organisation has also acknowledged his government's efforts in this regard and said due to the Swachh Bharat campaign, a possibility was created to save three lakh human lives.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi said that, he was told that Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation had also reported that as rural sanitation improved in India, it led to a decline in heart problems among children and improvement in the Body Mass Index (BMI) among women.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressing happiness that Gandhi's dream of cleanliness was about to be fulfilled, said that, "Gandhiji used to say a village could only become a model when it was completely clean. Today, we are heading towards making the entire country a model."

Prime Minister Narendra Modi said that, "The campaign has not only improved the lives of crores of Indians, but it has also played a significant role in achieving the goals set by the UN."

Prime Minister Narendra Modi said that, One of the least talked about aspects of the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan was that the 11 crore toilets built under it had opened a new chapter of economic activity in rural India.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi said that, the simple meaning of democracy was that people should be at the centre of policies and schemes.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi said that,  for decades, India witnessed "constitutional federalism", but it was his government that attempted to change it to "co-operative federalism" and with time, it was now moving towards "competitive-cooperative federalism."

Prime Minister Narendra Modi voiced satisfaction that there was a race among all the states in India now to bag the top spot in the "cleanliness ranking".

Prime Minister Narendra Modi reiterating the philosophy of "Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam" (the whole world is one single family), said that, India wanted to share its experience and expertise with other countries.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi said that, besides Swachch Bharat Abhiyan, many other "people's movements" such as "Fit India" to promote fitness and preventive healthcare, "Jal Jeevan Mission" focusing on water conservation and recycling were going on in India.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi said that, India was headed towards getting rid of single-use plastic by 2022.

The Prime Minister Narendra Modi asserted that he has full faith that the strength and determination of 138 crore Indians would ensure the success of all such campaigns.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched the cleanliness campaign MahatmaGandhi's birth anniversary on 2 October 2014, after Narendra Modi became the Prime Minister of India in MAY 2014.

The Prime Minister Narendra Modi thanked everyone associated with the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation for bestowing the Global honour on him with the Global Award of the Global Goalkeeper.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi said that,democracy and an English-based judicial system gave added confidence to investors as there would be no problem of interpretation.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi said that, the government is looking at investing Rs 100 trillion in building new airports, railway lines, electrification, laying new roads and giving houses to all. “Infrastructure is a priority.”

Prime Minister Narendra Modi said that, “One challenge that is before us today is that of nuclear energy, because, since we are not a member of the NSG, we do not really have the ability to get the fuel for producing nuclear energy.”

Prime Minister Narendra Modi said that, “If we were to get that opportunity, we could perhaps be a model in this area for the world,”
 

The NSG controls most of the world’s nuclear trade. While the U.S. and other countries support India’s entry into the NSG, China has opposed it saying India has not signed the Nuclear Non Proliferation Treaty.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi led India and the U.S. President Donald Trump announced in March 2019 that six U.S. companies would set up the reactors to produce Nuclear Power in India.
